A lot of people are giving it flack for the front end, but honestly I thought the headlights/fascia were the MK7’s weak point. I really like this. I’ll be waiting for the R release but I am pretty sure that the R will be my 30th bday gift to myself. I was assuming I’d have to give up manual (which is okay) but they’re still continuing on with it for now.

I actually loved the MkVII front end, especially the LACK of these hood strakes that I felt ruined the Jetta. On the plus side, at least they’re keeping the “slit” grille and not morphing over to the corporate VW face.
This is definitely good, I just didn’t hate the old one.
Wheels are horrid, though. They look like something from a 90s EV concept.

Yeah I don’t get the flack either and I love how the MK7 looks. These press photos don’t help, the MK8 looks much better on video. Really excited to hear about the R now.

The MKVII was peak Golf. I feel they have ruined it, not buying another Golf R as my next car. Probably a S5 Sportback.

The Sportback is definitely a contender for me, too (probably just a regular A5 if I can find the V6....aka “S5 lite”). I hate to be that guy, but I still can’t do the 2.0t in a luxury car. It feels too overworked and under-refined for that application, unlike in a sports car. That V6, on the other hand...

S5 Sport back is another consideration for me. It will come down to how effectively the hatch in the sport back or MK8R can be used like my current FoST

I will not be getting anything that looks like these wheels. You are correct.

It’s mostly flack from people that will never buy it anyway, as it usually goes.

I dunno. I’ve always thought that the MK7 was the best-looking Golf since the MK4 by a country mile. This one seems like it’s fussy for the sake of fussing.
“The MK7 is too clean. Let’s scribble a little more.”
I think there have been 2 eras of modern VW design that have been spot-on: the late 90s, and the past decade. They set a precedent for super-clean detailing, inarguable surfacing, and overall trend-setting. This seems more like the DeSilva-era messiness like this:
It’s hard to do super-clean design. Really hard. And people who say that clean is boring have no idea how difficult it is to get that stuff right.
The MK8's front end gives me some serious agita.

The one single line continuing from the top of the headlights through the grille, and the headlights and grille being rather slim and low down the front fascia, makes it look sleepy, or like this emoji.

I remember seeing a comment about the questionable legality of having a red light on the front of a car. Otherwise I think it’s great. I think the new interior looks a bit brighter and more modern than the emotionless MK 7(I personally really enjoyed sitting in a MK 7 mind you).

I rank Golfs 1-7 best to worst (in terms of looks) as:
2 1 6 5 3 7 4
I do not like the fogs on the 8. That alone kills it for me. I now rank:
2 1 6 5 3 7 4 8

As I said on the other post about this:
As a current MK7 owner, if I had to replace it I would look for a used MK7.5, because I like the buttons on the interior and don’t need a big screen (my 2020 Outback has convinced me of that).
I think the exterior of the MK8 looks good, but not so different that it would push me to want to buy new.

There’s a MkV GTI 2-door for sale at the corner of Wayne and Smithville . Any interest? I haven’t taken a close look at it, but it looks nice as I drive by. Appears to be lowered a bit.

I like it and it will only get better. With new VW/Audi’s I always think, “hmm I dunno if I like that.” Then by the end of the chassis run I think, “D amn this is the best one yet, I dunno if I’m ready for another one.”

In general, GTIs are not good looking cars. Mk1 and 2 get high ranks because they’re the “classic” look and their aesthetic has aged well. Mk6 is next because it came out of the mid-2000s blah look of the Mk5. Mk3 is after the 5 because holy crap are those things ugly boxes. And I say that despite the fact that I love them unconditionally. 7 is just aggro. Mk4 is last because damn are those bad looking cars.

Over by the Muffler Bros? Ehh. Part of me wants a Mk5 as a daily but I know the insurance is gonna be more expensive than I’d like, plus I just bought a Mk3 Jetta that I’m going to daily. I’m gonna put my Golf into storage (I’m putting together a small workshop) and start modifying it. The Jetta I picked up is bone stock and low miles, so it should be more reliable.

The MkIV will be a future classic in my opinion as it influenced every Golf after that and solidified VWs position in the compact car segment. The VI was just a huge facelift of the V although with much better quality inside and out.

Perhaps. I can see the faster ones being desirable. Certainly the R32 or maybe a VR6 Golf or Jetta. But I don’t really see something like an AEG car becoming desirable in the same way a base model Mk1 or Mk2 have. That might just be a result of what I experienced with my brother’s Mk4. Burned and leaked oil, slow, soft handling, interior falling apart. To me they seem significantly less robust than the Mk3 and certainly less than the Mk5.

I might swing by and see if there’s a price on the windshield or something. I’m somewhat seriously considering picking up a 2.0T A5 Beetle with a stick later this year. They insure much cheaper despite kind of being a GTI.

Nice. I would love to see my wife go with one of those when she’s ready to upgrade her current Beetle. I rented one with the 5 cylinder once and really enjoyed it.

Car and Driver seemed to indicate there was an LED strip up front. I may be reading that wrong though.

The LED strip is the white part just under the red. That part does light up (in white).
